Seattle Skyline Moody Blue Hour EOS R

Street Photography with the Canon EOS R

This might seem unorthodox, but the Canon EOS R for street photography is amazing.

I have had the camera for about three months and tested it out every week since then.

Every lens I have been using has gone on the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and it has not yet disappointed.

Capturing street photos with the EOS R is sure a game-changer from my previous Canon 6D.

Here are five of my best tips on how to use the Canon EOS R for street photography.

The Flip Screen

One of the best shots to get in street photography is a low angle shot.

Sometimes, one has to get real low and see if everything is in focus or if the subject is in the frame.

With the Canon EOS R flip screen, getting on your stomach is a thing of the past.

This great feature has definitely saved my back and keeping my chin away from concrete.

Not only does this work for low angle photos, but also for those over the fence shots.

Flip that screen out and down towards you and you’ll see those angles that you never have seen before.

Focus Touch

These days some cameras have touch screens to focus or to take a photo.

But let’s say your subject is moving quickly and you have no time to adjust your focus point.

This is where the focus point feature on the Canon EOS R comes in handy.

While looking through your viewfinder, there is an option to move the focus point with your thumb on the screen, without removing your eye from the viewfinder.

Canon really did some wonders with this feature.

The Ergonomics

This camera feels great in the hand.

More lightweight than the Canon 6D, sometimes even with a lens such as the Canon 50mm 1.8 with the adapter.

I never feel like it will slip right off my hand since the grip feels amazing.

The button placements is something worth getting used to.

However, once you master the camera, it’ll be second nature.

The classic Canon menu system is still there and easy to use.

Who doesn’t want a camera that makes you take photos all the time?

Megapixels & Frames Per Second

I’m not the type of person that talks about megapixels, but 30mp is the sweet spot in my opinion.

Perfect for cropping in just a tiny bit more and printing larger photos.

When setting the Canon EOS R for a high burst rate, you’ll get 8fps.

This is perfect in street photography for fast-moving subjects.

Just make sure there is an SD card fast enough to capture those photos.

The best-recommended SD cards are the Sony 64GB 300MB/S speed and the SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB 170MB/S.

Don’t miss a shot with these powerful cards.

Sensor Protection and Weather Sealing

When out taking street photographs, weather can play a huge role.

Luckily for the Canon EOS R, the sensor closes on its own when changing lenses to protect it from dust and moisture.

This was one key feature that made me want this camera since I’m always in the rain.

Not only is this a great feature, but the weather sealing is amazing.

Well protected in the dials and buttons.

No issues have occurred when out in light rain.

Conclusion

The future of Canon mirrorless is just the beginning and I have to say the EOS R stands out.

For street photography, this camera stacks up just right.
