Probably one of Canon’s most affordable lens for crop sensor (APS-C) and full frame cameras: the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM.

Not only is this 50mm good for photography, but also great for video.

For the price and features of this lens, I believe everyone should have it in their camera bag.

I use this lens for street and portrait photography as shown below.

Here are my top 5 reasons this 50mm belongs to all Canon camera owners.

Price

This Canon 50mm 1.8 STM starts at around $129.00, which is a bargain!

If you are a first time Canon camera owner and are looking for a great deal on a lens, this is the one.

There are other 50mm, but they tend to be pricier side.

You’ll get your moneys worth, especially when called up for a photoshoot.

Size & Weight

If you are looking for a compact and not so heavy lens, then this is it.

The size and weight of this 50mm lens is next to nothing.

Especially those with a Canon 5D Mark IV or Canon EOS R.

You probably won’t even notice the lens being on the camera.

For street photography, this is a huge plus because you don’t want to be caring lots of gear with you.

Having A 1.8 Aperture

Probably the best feature of this lens is having a 1.8 aperture.

This is ideal for portraits and street photography (to give you that shallow depth of field) and night photography (especially in low light situations).

I don’t suggest always shooting at 1.8, but it’s there when you really need it.

It is very sharp and always gives me outstanding results at 1.8.

The Lens Effect

Now this might not pertain to everyone’s Canon 50mm 1.8, but my lens in particular gives of a soft look, especially on lights.

This can benefit you or not, but for me, I do love that effect.

A lot of photographers nowadays love to add a soft effect to their photos.

For street photography, it’s almost as if I’m shooting with Cinestill 800t.

Versatility

Another great feature of this lens is that you can almost use it for any type of photography and videography.

For APS-C owners, due note that even though it says 50mm, you will have factor the crop.

This means multiplying 50mm by 1.8 which will give you a focal length of around 90mm.

Not saying this is a con, but when you upgrade to a full frame, this is when you start getting that 50mm range.

The video feature of this lens is great when used in manual focusing.

This can give you great B-roll footage and works great with 60fps or 120fps.

Conclusion

As a photographer and videographer, the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM will always be in my bag.

Not just for the price, but for the versatility to having an aperture of 1.8.
