What Street Photography Can Teach You

Many find that street photography is intimidating and confusing.

However, you won’t know if you like something until you try it.

Street photography has taught me many things in the past seven months since starting it.

Here are 5 things that street photography can teach you.

Lines & Patterns

Lines and patterns are all over the city, no matter how big or small it is.

You can do so much with lines such as lead your audience to the main subject.

Patterns come in many shapes, colors and sizes.

Use them to your advantage as an abstract image.

Stories

One of my favorites out of what street photography can teach you.

Yeah, going out and taking adventure shots in nature can be a story.

But street photography is more in depth, in my opinion.

I explained this before, take a look at your surroundings.

Then focus on the minor details.

That’s your story.

Capture it in your own way.

People

People are a huge part of street photography.

They are your “models” out there.

What people can teach you is how to compose them in the shot.

Do you want to give your audience a sense of scale or depth?

Just don’t piss them off with your camera, give some space.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

This can mean a couple of things.

Anything can happen at any time and you always have to be aware.

You can miss your shot.

Even if you do, there are always other opportunities, so stay alert.

The other meaning is to watch out for people who are trying to steal from you.

Carrying Less Gear

This lesson coincides with the one mentioned above.

The less gear you have, the less you have to worry about not getting the shot.

Imagine having three lenses in your bag and one mounted on your camera.

You are currently using your wide angle, but see a potential photo that looks great with a telephoto lens.

You switch, but during that time, a funny looking character walks in the perfect framing and you miss your chance.

Not saying you should not carry all this gear, but focus more on what’s important.
