Warming Up for Street Photography

Warming up is something over looked, especially in street photography.

Before working out, it is essential that you warm up.

You can pull a muscle in the worst of case scenario.

Ever since I started doing street photography, I believe that warming up your vision is also essential.

Here are some tips on how to go about warming up.

Listen To Music

This works great for me especially when driving to a location.

I blast my Spotify playlist to get my mental vision working.

Most of the songs are jazz, jazz hop, or trap instrumentals due to association with the city.

Motivation

Get motivated before you head out on the streets.

Don’t just force yourself to create content.

Look at other people’s work, listen to music as stated above, or watch videos.

Set a goal for yourself on what to capture.

Take Warm Up Photos

The first few photos may not be the ones you like, but they warm you up.

I always tend to take a basic shot, this way I can see what I can do to improve it.

Maybe I’ll change my angle, use a different lens, or adjust my settings.

You can always use these shots to make stories to build up an awesome shot.

Walk Around The Block

This is something that I love to do with street photography.

A million things can happen within one block of a street.

I don’t necessarily have my camera out, just keeping my eye out for great compositions.

Once finished, I take my camera out and retrace my steps to take the shots.

Study Past Photos

Look back at the photos you taken in the past.

Train your eyes to see what you could have done better.

Maybe this kind of warm up can get you creative juices flowing.

Street photography always has something different to offer.

You can always improve on the composition or depth of past photos.

Conclusion

Learn to warm up before you head out and take photos.

This can work for any kind of photography.
