Upgrading Your Photography Skill or Gear?

Are you looking into upgrading your photography skill or gear?

It comes to a surprise to many that gear sometimes doesn’t make that much of a difference.

There are photographers that use phones for their photos on platforms such as Instagram and 500PX.

There are some crucial reasons why upgrading your gear isn’t the best thing for a photographer.

Light

Light is everywhere and one thing a photographer must understand is light.

From ambient to golden, it’s crucial to master how much light you are letting in your sensor.

Shadows created from an object also makes an impact in a photo.

Studying light is very important, even for those who are still shooting in auto.

Experiencing Life

Have you ever wanted to travel to a different part of the world, but had limited time and money to spend?

Was that cash suppose to towards a new lens?

If so, why not invest it in traveling somewhere new.

A new prime lens is roughly a plane ticket, food and a place to stay for a week if you do your research well.

I currently use a Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 and Canon 6D and it has been in my lineup for quite some time.

It has taken me to California, Georgia, Utah, and Washington to name a few states.

The experience in life is what counts.

Invest in Education

More and more photographers produce content for consumers to invest in such as workshops, books and plugins for Photoshop.

Why does this matter?

Because it can take your creativity and knowledge to the next level.

I, myself, search for the best books and techniques to improve everyday.

Even some content is free such as on YouTube.

Will New Gear Actually Help?

As much as I love new gear myself, I ask myself the same question.

Will it improve my skill?

90% of the time the answer will be no.

Composition and light don’t come with the camera or lens.

As mentioned before, technique will help you in the long run.

Stop wasting time deciding what gear you will buy and start by going outside (or inside) and enjoy photography.
