Safety During Street Photography

Safety in the city can always by pass you.

Lot’s of photographers having their gear stolen, getting arrested or even getting hit.

There are a few articles explaining how to stay safe while doing street photography.

Nonetheless, this is my take on how to be safe out in the streets.

Bring A Friend

Even if it’s a friend that doesn’t take photos, invite them.

Especially during the evening hours when light is low.

If you must go out alone, be ready to run or carry pepper spray.

Bringing a friend or two can make things go much smoother.

Backpack

Pretty self explanatory, or is it?

You don’t always want to be carrying around your gear on your neck or hand.

Having your camera inside the bag when getting out and in the car is best.

That way, you don’t draw any attention.

A great recommended backpack that I use is the Wandrd PRVKE 31.

It keeps my gear safe since it opens from the back and has an opening on the side for easy camera grabbing.

When In Doubt, Don’t Do It

Don’t be that guy that ruins it for everybody.

Yes, there are some people that do it for the gram.

However, it’ll be ruined for the rest of us.

Just think of all the places that have closed or no access to just because of a photographer.

Your safety is always a priority.

Worst case scenario, it can lead to an arrest.

Parking

This might not be related to photography, but it can help.

Always try to find parking where there is good lighting and a lot of traffic.

Plus, don’t leave your valuables in the car.

There are many photographers that have had their stuff stolen because of backpacks left out in the open.

But if you must park in a garage, do some research and read reviews.

Best place to find parking is using your local city’s parking app.

Have A Plan

Go to your desired destination of taking photos.

It can be distracting at times to stay on track especially during street photography.

As long as you have some sort of idea, you’ll probably save time and money.

Google Maps has always helped me find locations and local coffee shops.

Dress Comfortably and Carry Light

You’ll be walking around a lot, so why not wear the most comfortable clothes and shoes.

And try to carry as little as possible.

This can help your back and you won’t be as tired.

Instead of carrying a heavy tripod, carry a small gorilla pod.

Instead of carrying three lenses, carry one prime lens.

Conclusion

Photography is always enjoyable, but safety comes first.

Are there any tips that I missed?
