5 Street Photography Tips

5 Street Photography Tips

Street photography has become one of my favorite types of photography.

When I moved out to Washington, I thought I was only going to be outside in nature all the time.

But the cities of Seattle and Tacoma changed my style of photography.

Here are 5 tips for you to experiment on your next street photography adventures.

Use a Slow Shutter Speed

You don’t really need a tripod for this trick especially with cameras being so advanced these days.

Using a slow shutter speed (i.e. at 1/15th of a second) can give your photos some great results.

It will take time to get it right especially with light changing all the time.

Use this with people while they are walking or are on their bike.

Take Photos of Strangers

I’m not saying go up to them and ask them for their permission, but to capture the candid moment.

Tell a story with the photograph.

Try to be discreet if you can.

If you are intimidated, practice on a friend when they are not looking.

Lights and Shadows

A lot of photographers aren’t fans of harsh light.

But this can play a huge part in street photography.

Buildings can cast shadows and the sun can create lines in different areas of the city.

This opens up a whole new world and is great to experiment with.

Look for Leading Lines

Probably my favorite tip of all.

Leading lines are all over the city.

From railings, to buildings and even lines on the roads.

Use leading lines to draw your viewers attention to the subject.

Take Lots of Photos

Don’t just take one shot at one setting and move onto the next one.

Usually I photograph about fifteen photos at one setting.

This can teach you on what you can improve next time you go out to do street photography.

Conclusion

Only way to improve is by going out and taking some photos.

Use these street photography tips to your advantage and don’t stop creating.
